A new study suggests that drugs that are used to treat erectile dysfunction may be more likely to cause heart problems.

WASHINGTON: The American Heart Association (AHA) issued a new report today that highlights the link between Viagra (sildenafil citrate) and heart problems.
Heart problems are among the leading causes of death in the U. S. and one in every five Americans has a heart condition, the association said. The findings come from an analysis of nearly 4,000 clinical trials.
The most common side effects associated with Viagra were erectile dysfunction and chest pain.
In fact, a small number of men who took Viagra suffered erectile dysfunction and were found to have a 50 percent higher risk of developing heart attacks than the group who had not taken the drug.
Other common side effects were gastrointestinal problems, including diarrhea, nausea, heartburn, nausea, and indigestion.
“Heart problems are among the leading causes of death in the U. and one in every five Americans has a heart condition,” said senior study leader Dr. David G. Amsden, director of the American Heart Association’s Center for Cardiovascular Disease.
The new study, published in the journal Circulation, was a follow-up to a two-year placebo-controlled trial of sildenafil, which Pfizer said was used to treat erectile dysfunction. The results of the new study have not yet been released.
Dr. Brousch said this finding was in response to a review of previous research in the area of cardiovascular disease. He also said the new findings were likely due to an earlier review of the research in the same area.
The new study was conducted by the New York Heart Association and showed that men who took sildenafil had a 10 percent higher chance of developing heart problems. The study also showed that men who took sildenafil had a 20 percent higher risk of developing heart attacks.
“We were able to find a relationship between sildenafil use and a higher risk of heart problems in men who were taking the drug and who were also taking a similar heart disease medication,” Dr. Schapest said.
“These findings, which were based on two large, well-conducted, randomized controlled trials, have important implications for patients and health care providers.”
Brousch said the study also had important implications for physicians and patients, as it was an early finding in a trial of sildenafil. It was also the first randomized controlled trial to investigate the use of Viagra to treat erectile dysfunction in men.
“We have seen that men who are taking sildenafil are more likely to have a cardiovascular event, but it is a small number in this specific group,” Dr. Brousch said.
Schapest said there are some important reasons men who take Viagra don’t have a heart condition.
“We’re seeing more people who are having heart problems who have not had a heart attack and it may be that it is because they don’t want to take Viagra because they have heart disease,” he said.
A few men had the condition and are now on Viagra. Other men have been diagnosed with a rare heart problem.
“It’s important to note that Viagra is a prescription medication, so you should not take it for a heart condition,” Dr.
Brousch said Viagra is not approved to treat erectile dysfunction in men.
